Landforms: Shaping the Earth: 2nd Grade Decodable Readers
Landforms: Shaping the Earth a science reader for second grade introduces the concept that landforms can be formed quickly and over time. Children often hear terms that don't have meaning for them. Giving them a better understanding of what causes changes in our Earth will help them better understand terms like landforms, deposition, volcanoes, and glaciers.
Optional extension activities were created for vocabulary focus and asking and answering questions about nonfiction text. These pages can be eliminated and the reader can be used alone.
Information Text Standards Addressed If Chosen:
RI. 1 Asking and answering questions
RI. 4 Vocabulary
The set includes
• Landforms
• Description of Landforms
• Shaping Land
• understanding key vocabulary and phrases {erosion, Earth's materials, landforms, physical features, precipitation, relief map}
• asking and answering questions
Parts of the book have the language of an informational text {factual}. If you're currently working on an informational reading/writing unit of study, this little text is a nice connection. Idea: Students can research additional information and add "Wow Facts" or "Did You Know" bubbles to certain pages in the book. A focus on specific landforms would be an interesting topic for students to research.
Directions: Cut the pages in half, assemble, and staple. Allow some time for coloring and illustrating. Use during shared reading or small group reading instruction. Teach the key vocabulary and let the children write definitions in their own words and/or draw pictures to show the meaning of the words. Also, allow students to ask and answer questions about the text. Reread individually or in pairs.
