2nd Grade Decodable Readers Particles of Matter In Architecture : Science Reader

Particles of Matter In Architecture reader for second grade explains the basic concepts of how to construct an evidence-based account of how an object made of a small set of pieces can be disassembled and made into a new object. Using building and architecture as a means to help this concept become more concrete. Children often hear terms that don't have meaning for them. Giving them a better understanding of what particles of matter is gives them a frame of reference.

Optional extension activities were created for vocabulary focus and asking and answering questions about nonfiction text. These pages can be eliminated and the fluent reader can be used alone.

The set includes

• Particles of Matter Introduction- the word atom is introduced, yet does not have to be known or understood at the 2nd grade level. It is not used throughout the text. The word is only introduced in the intro.

• A beginning look at the word specifications and what that means

• Architecture and how this helps explain who small pieces create bigger things and can depend on function and appearance

• Architectural Engineers

• understanding key vocabulary and phrases {dissolves, matter, solid, liquid, gas, heavier}

• asking and answering questions

Parts of the book have the language of an informational text {factual}. If you're currently working on an informational reading/writing unit of study, this little text is a nice connection. Idea: Students can research additional information and add "Wow Facts" or "Did You Know" bubbles to certain pages in the book.

Directions: Cut the pages in half, assemble, and staple. Allow some time for coloring and illustrating. Use during shared reading or small group reading instruction. Teach the key vocabulary and let the children write definitions in their own words and/or draw pictures to show the meaning of the words. Also, allow students to ask and answer questions about the text. Reread individually or in pairs.

★ Readability: 4th-5th grade (Shared Reading for 2nd may be necessary due to vocabulary. Sentence structure is written for 2nd grade.)
